I Got Hurt on the Job and I Feel Like I'm Being a Burden by Asking to Take Time Off

Your Corporate Black Girl

Nikki,

I got hurt on the job while recording a video. I have a minor sprain in my foot and I can't put any weight on it without feeling pain.

I decided to let my boss know and they are opening an inquiry with HR. This is the first time I've ever gotten hurt at work and I feel bad about it.

I feel like I am being a burden by asking to take time off to work from home for being hurt.

Should I feel bad?

Dear Hurt on the Job,

I think it's normal for employers to open inquiries within HR if an employee gets hurt on the job. It's likely a part of their process because there may be associated bills that their insurance may need to cover for your expenses.  I would consider this to be the standard business procedure and therefore nothing for you to feel bad about.

Make sure that you get an X-ray on your foot to make sure there's no unseen damage. If there's some real damage there, you may need a procedure done. Give them any bills you incur as a result. Doctor visits, prescriptions et al.

Again, there's nothing to feel bad about. Take care of yourself so that you can get back to work! (But make sure you're fully healed first!)

Best Regards,

Nikki Davis
