At This Point, My Job Needs to Be Paying My Phone Bill

Your Corporate Black Girl

Dear Nikki,

Hey! I have an hourly role in a staff position. In other words, I’m an HR Coordinator and the only hourly person on my team. This comes with a few perks but lines get blurred easily. While I’m working from home, I’ve been using my personal cell phone and printer for work and they want me to be available after my normal work hours.

How do I bring up the fact that they need to be paying my phone bill lol and though I’m thankful it’s offered, I don’t want to work past a certain time for OT (work-life balance tings) .

In a time where everyone is having to work from home and work differently, in general, you will have to be open-minded and willing to work outside of your normal set up. More may be required of you in the near term while the company and/or your dept gets back on track. Adjust. This may mean that you have to work longer hours. It's temporary.

Regarding your personal home use for work purposes, look into your employee handbook for expenses that your company can reimburse you for.  If this isn't an option, there is a section when filing your taxes, if you itemize your dedications, to claim work expenses that you are not reimbursed for. Look into that and claim your expenses.

Keep your head up, but overall, be grateful that you still have an opportunity for work right now. Your temporary discomfort will pay off in the end.

Good luck!
