Doing Market Research for the Role You Are Applying For

Your Corporate Black Girl

Dear Nikki,

I was wondering as a female is there anyway to ensure that I get paid the same salary as my male counterparts? Whether through a contract initially or any legislations that prohibit unfair treatment?

I think your greatest defense for ensuring equal pay is doing your market research for the role your applying for, partnered with your particular skill set.

Once you've got the data, then you have the power to negotiate your asking salary.  Be realistic in your ask, but you can only really do this after doing the research first.

There are sites like Salary.com, PayScale and Glassdoor that can help you find this information out. Please also know that companies also consider your benefits as a part of your overall compensation package, so you'll also want to do research on the company culture that you're applying for.

Companies nowadays like to do things like, filling up the break rooms with snacks and drinks that are free for the employees. This is something that is considered a benefit! It's unforeseen but it's also something that companies will invest in vs putting that extra cash in your pockets.

Compensation is a complex number that goes deeper than the wage gap. The more educated you are about the role, the experience you have and how to leverage that, along with the fringe benefits of the job are all factored in - will help you get what you deserve. Do your research!
