My Goal Has Been to Be a Writer-How Can I Move Forward in this Field in Corporate America?

Your Corporate Black Girl

Dear Nikki,

How do I get into my field after so many years of temping in corporate America with no promotion or moving forward with a BA in English. My goal has been to be a writer.

Nikki:

There's nothing wrong with continuing to work your corporate job while beginning to pursue your passion of writing on the side.

If writing is what you want to be doing, then you need to be writing! Being a Writer is pretty vague. Do you have a niche that you enjoy writing about? Do you know what direction you want to take your writing in? Are you looking to freelance or write for yourself?

If freelancing is something you're interested in, then research opportunities in your area for journalists like the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and start to build your network. You'll want to start to attend networking events within the field so people can begin to recognize your name.

Do you already have pieces of work published, like a blog? If so, you can start to submit your work to publications for samples of your work.

Speaking of, if writing is something you want to do but don't have the platform to write - create the platform and then bring people to your work. You can do this with a blog! If there's a specific (or not so specific topic) that you're passionate about, start a blog about it. Once you build up your arsenal of work, send out your best work to relatable publications.

Or write a book!

There are resources on Facebook that can help you learn about self publishing and getting over the hurdles of getting started on your book idea(s).

I think the hope of doing what you want to do is really closer than you think. You just have to hone in on what you want to write about, who you want to write for and then get started.

I hope this helps!
